A mockery of democracy
THE Government's reluctance to hold the three pending by-elections -- including one for a seat left vacant for more than a year -- is unworthy of any regime that pretends to govern a democracy.
The Fianna Fail-Green Coalition deserves to be forced into calling them, and losing the lot. Also pending are two events of real or potential importance, the long-delayed referendum on children's rights and the election by popular vote of a mayor of Dublin.
Presumably they will eventually be held on the same day as the by-elections. But such is the Government's hatred of transparency and lack of administrative competence that staunch supporters of children's rights do not know the exact wording of the referendum and local government reformers do not know the proposed powers of the Dublin mayor.
