What promises to be the most interesting sports contest of 2017 - the election of a new president of the Olympic Council of Ireland on Thursday - should be fascinating, especially after something of a 'dirty war' broke out late last week.

Favourite to hold the seat for the 'old guard', Willie O'Brien walked into an embarrassing, but well researched ambush, from Joanne Cantwell on RTE's Saturday Sport about his length of service, his (five) business class trips while the athletes went steerage, and "taking my eye off the ball" during the reign of Pat Hickey.

It now appears it's a black ball game with rival Sarah Keane, with Basketball Ireland's Bernard O'Byrne trailing down the field after the controversy surrounding his use of credit cards while heading the FAI re-surfaced.
