Developers don't tend to sit in a corner bathing their wounds with calamus, hyssop and juniper. Not in Galway anyway. In a hoggish attempt at gentrification, two developers are planning to make smithereens out of St Patrick's new church and rebuild it elsewhere.

It's like the scene from Bugsy when Warren Beatty walks into a house he wants with a suitcase full of money and says to the owner: sling your hook.

The buzzwords to note in the plan are "key opportunity site" and "Eyre Square East Quarter". The developers say the church would have to be re-housed. Otherwise where would they put their planned hotel, shops and apartments, for the love and honour of Mike? So to be perfectly clear, they demolish and rebuild.
