This will be much worse than Blue Flu - but you can't blame the gardaí

The decision by the country's rank-and-file gardaí to take planned industrial action over four dates in November is unprecedented in the history of the State.
This time, the situation seems to be much worse than it was on the so-called 'Blue Flu' Friday in 1998, when 5,000 members called in sick.
When our front-line officers - possibly joined by the sergeants and inspectors - do take action, they will be conscious of not losing the support and goodwill of the public, which has been central to the success of consensual policing since the foundation of the State.
