These shocking, heart-rending accounts require drastic action

There have been many supposed watershed moments in the chequered history of care homes in Ireland, be they facilities for the elderly or the intellectually disabled.

Leas Cross and Áras Attracta are the ones which grabbed the most headlines, perhaps because people could see, thanks to covert filming, just how bad things were.

Without the same visual aid, the complaints detailed in these pages today may not have the same power to shock. But many of them are no less distressing than what was witnessed in Áras Attracta last December and they shouldn't be treated any less seriously.
