■ Shock and revulsion as unarmed garda Tony Golden (above) was shot dead in an apparent attempted murder suicide at a house close to the border. In a weekend of tragedy, 10 people died when a fire swept through a Travellers' halting site in Carrickmines, Co Dublin.
■ It emerged that murdered garda Golden was shot with a high-powered Glock pistol, of a type preferred by gangland assassins and special forces personnel. Investigators discovered the 9mm Glock automatic beside the body of Adrian Crevan Mackin, who took his own life after shooting his partner and the courageous garda trying to protect her.
■ Finance Minister Michael Noonan (below) has put money in the pockets of every voter as the country finally moved away from years of austerity with a giveaway Budget.
■ A Budget promise on free childcare is already in doubt, with major concerns about the sector's capacity to cope with the sheer numbers involved. The Coalition pledged additional months of free childcare for children from the age of three until they start school.
■ Garda Tony Golden was laid to rest after a funeral attended by his heartbroken family and thousands of colleagues. His wife Nicola (below) comforted their two small children at the church in Blackrock, Co Louth.
