Irish born scientist and TCD graduate William C Campbell jointly wins the 2015 Nobel Prize for medicine.


The European Court of Justice strikes down a 15-year-old Safe Harbour agreement after an Irish High Court action. The now invalid agreement allowed about 4,500 US companies to expedite data transfers to the US, but was found to violate EU citizens' fundamental rights to privacy and data protection.


Russian warships in the Caspian Sea launch rockets in to Syria. Russian president Vladimir Putin says the attacks are aimed at Isil and are carried out in support of the Syrian army's own offensives.


Ireland's soccer team celebrate a 1-0 victory over world champions Germany following an electrifying Euro 2016 qualifier at Dublin's Aviva Stadium. The winning goal is scored by Shane Long.


A Scottish nurse who contracted Ebola in Sierra Leone last year is readmitted to an isolation unit in a London hospital in a serious condition. The virus remained in her system after being left over from the original infection.
