The Irishman who was never late for work... but this once was lucky

Normally, I am never late for work.

I jump on the metro from Montgomery station beside our rented house and after 10 minutes I'm at Maalbeek metro station, right in the middle of the EU quarter and just five minutes' walk from our office. Yesterday morning, for the first time in years, I slept it out. Our 10-week-old daughter Mia had been unusually cranky the previous night and kept us awake.

At nine o'clock, my smartphone was popping more than normal after what I discovered was an attack at the airport. I continued getting ready for work until I saw messages from Ireland coming in. Why do people abroad always overreact in these situations, I thought. Then my sister rang and asked if that was my metro station. I should have been arriving at the station at the time it was attacked.
