So long, Leonard: Death of a ladies' man and poet
Veteran singer accepted his impending death with a wry smile, says Ed Power
Leonard Cohen, who has died aged 82, lived, loved and lost with remarkable passion, yet rock music's great laureate seemed always to exist slightly outside the drama of his own music.
His songs could be keening and tumultuous. He, however, was rumpled and inscrutable, an enigma in a dark suit.
"Leonard has a sort of stillness to his character," his backing singer Hattie Webb told me ahead of his concert in Ireland in 2010.
