News of the bankruptcy of Steve Staunton, the former Ireland international soccer player and manager, is a bit saddening for anyone who enjoyed his gritty performances in a green jersey. Who wants to see someone who gave so much on the field for his country hit by financial troubles?

Staunton is far from alone, as the long reach of the crash drives more and more people into bankruptcy both here and in the UK.

Staunton's case is not one of those life lessons for football players who earn massive bucks, spend it, don't invest or plan for the future, and end up broke.
