Gerry Adams's stock response when asked about his friend Thomas 'Slab' Murphy's conviction for tax fraud in recent weeks was: "That is a matter for the courts to decide."
Yesterday, having adjourned for two weeks to consider evidence, the Special Criminal Court decided on the matter and imprisoned 'Slab' for 18 months for defrauding the State of almost €190,000 in unpaid taxes.
In court, the former IRA chief took the ruling in his stride. He nodded and smiled to family members gathered in the courtroom, before being led into a holding cell.
