Connacht's task in their Amlin Challenge Cup semi-final got a whole lot tougher at the weekend.

Toulon, the French club blocking Connacht's path to a dream European final, went to the top of the French Championship table on Saturday with a coruscating defeat of the champions Perpignan.

It wasn't simply the fact of the 33-23 victory that will furrow brows among Connacht's spies. With only one league match left, that result put Toulon on course for premier position going into the knock-out phases. But it was the manner of Toulon's triumph that should have concerned Irish onlookers.
