When they began to desert, quietly heading for Auckland airport and the overseas flight, the wailing and gnashing of teeth was awful to behold. It was like someone had committed the cardinal sin -- they had questioned New Zealand's claim to be known as the best country in the world, the land that had everything.
Why on earth would anyone want to leave it?
But numerous numbers of young rugby players did. They included the greats, like All Blacks Carl Hayman, Aaron Mauger, Nick Evans, Doug Howlett, Luke McAlister, Chris Masoe, Byron Kelleher and Chris Jack as well as many other, lesser-known players who headed to European countries like France and Italy. The trickle threatened to become a flood and brows were furrowed back home at the trend.
