Obituary: Johnny Murphy, accomplised stage and screen actor
Born: 1943; died: February 23 2016
He became world famous for his role as trumpet player Joey 'The Lips' Fagan in The Commitments.
But Johnny Murphy, who died this week aged 72, was an accomplished actor, of stage and screen, before and after that 1991 movie which started as a small Irish story and grew to become a box-office hit.
When the award-winning English director Alan Parker came to Dublin the previous year to adapt Roddy Doyle's bestselling book about a working-class lad who wants to form a soul band, he considered casting a professional musician in the role of Joey The Lips.
