'Are you really retiring?" they ask. "No, just a little shy," comes my reply. The truth is I'm rewiring, not retiring. But the general reaction has somewhat taken me by surprise. In America (land of the free!) it was all high fives and congratulations - as if by retiring I'd actually achieved something. In Ireland, the most common response has been: "Was it your decision?" What a nation!

However, the funniest of all came from a former columnist of this newspaper, Gayle Killilea. On learning that I was going to join Sean Mulryan's Ballymore Group, she texted: "If I'd known you were going to become a property developer, I would have married you." To which I replied: "If you still have that €100m, it's not too late."
