Niall Muldoon: Building upon the sacred trust of protecting children

As Ombudsman for Children, my overall statutory responsibility is to promote and monitor the rights and welfare of children in Ireland.
Today I am attending a meeting in Geneva at which members of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child will question an Irish Government delegation about the State's progress with fulfilling its obligations to children under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
The words of former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan come to mind: "There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they can grow up in peace."
