Medb Ruane: Why we're so shocked by the Milibands' naked rivalry

Not satisfied with beating his brother in the UK Labour leadership contest last week, Ed Miliband continued to rub his brother's nose in it. Anyone who has a sibling must have watched the Milibands and thought 'ouch'.

Damning David with faint praise and oddly chosen anecdotes, Miliband left his older brother with no real option but to withdraw from frontline politics. David, you may recall, was Gordon Brown's foreign secretary, charged with managing the Iraq mess. "The journey begins with humility about our record," David had said. So Ed trashed the policies, striking at his brother's record.

Louise Shackleton, David's wife, wept when he lost the leadership by only 1.3%. What future have their family gatherings now? Marion Kozak, their ma, was said to be in New York for a few days. The eminent moral philosopher Baroness Warnock had advised her to stay quiet, but what a dilemma ma faces now.
