With rents surging as a result of the shortage of homes, where exactly are those who want to bring up a family in their own home supposed to live?

Even if you are earning a reasonable salary of €40,000 - akin to that of a senior garda or teacher, your options are severely limited in the Greater Dublin Area.

Those who are rejecting the insecurity of renting are reluctantly heading much further afield in a bid to own their own home - to Westmeath, Laois and Louth. That is a relocation that will result in them having to drive for two to three hours each day just to get to and from work.
