Lucy Jones: Five things you need to know about this year’s Grammys
1. The Coronation of Adele ...I love the story about Adele giving £1,000 to every single staff member (including cleaners and canteen workers, apparently) at her record label XL as her album spiralled in popularity and album sales. Not that she needs tittle-tattle to promote a down-to-earth image; her girl-next-door, rags-to-riches story is firmly embedded in pop culture lore and multiple column inches. And last night, she cleaned up, winning six Grammys, including best album, record and song. I personally still get goosebumps when I think about watching her performance of Someone Like You at the Brits Awards last year. Arise Queen Adele.
2. The redemption of Chris Brown ... Chris Brown is the rapper who assaulted his then girlfriend Rihanna in 2009. You may remember the horrific picture of her swollen, bleeding face that were leaked by TMZ. He also bit her arms. It was no surprise that Brown's appearance (and subsequent win) at last night's Grammys has been met with opprobrium.
Personally I think it was deplorable that he was allowed to perform last night. Sure, everyone deserves a second chance but to celebrate Chris Brown prominently on stage so soon after his bout of domestic violence looks like an absolution. Sending a message out that biting and hitting a woman is wrong is way more important than Chris Brown's music (which is, btw, rubbish).
