Law not always the best way to stop ticket touts

When asked why he went to UCD soccer games, the late comedian Dermot Morgan replied "because I hate crowds".
While ticket-touting was not an issue Dermot ever faced, it is becoming an increasing problem in sporting events where the demand is so great that the tickets could be sold for almost any price. This has led to a sequence of events in Rio that would not be out of place in an episode of 'Father Ted'.
At the moment, there is no legal prohibition on ticket touting in Ireland despite several private members bills on the topic being introduced over the years.
