La La Land is just one of those zings

This hit musical nods to the Golden Age of movies with its vibrant colours but the mood is modern too

With a flutter of jazz hands and ja-ja-joo of a jazz quartet, director Damien Chazelle's La La Land has quick-stepped its way into Hollywood's heart.

And here, too. Irish Film Board figures show that the movie took €455,097 in its first week. We all love a hummable tune.

The story of the movie follows actress Mia and musician Sebastian as they wrestle with their desire for each other and success in their respective careers. Although the storyline may be too saccharine for some, the film and costume design are an homage to Old Hollywood. Kind of.
