'It's not easy being green', Kermit the Frog once sang, in a song recorded by artists as diverse as Van Morrison, Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra. It was written in 1970, when scientists began to take the idea of global warming more seriously and the first shoots of green politics began to appear.
The alarm was first raised by a Swedish scientist in 1896. Now, 120 years later, my sole personal offering to the green movement has been a green bin.
Well, there's a brown one there now to keep it company in the side passage, and between those two and the 'proper' bin, I find myself agreeing that being green isn't easy.
