Forgive us minister, as we tear up the report card you marked for yourself
The outgoing Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald broke from the tedious courtship ritual involved in trying to form a new government and spared no time bashing out a self-congratulatory press release, which was ostensibly intended to welcome the publication of the new crime statistics.
In reality, it was more about clapping herself on the back. But based on her party's disastrous showing in the election, it was too little, too late.
"Minister Fitzgerald welcomes significant garda progress in tackling burglaries - down 26.2pc quarter on quarter," gushed the headline of the gleeful declaration.
