When it comes to final farewells, us Irish prefer the time-honoured statutes of support and sympathy to overt or anguished shows of emotion.

There are exceptions when we allow the curtains over our inner feelings to be drawn aside, exposing the raw nerves of sorrow to the shock of daylight.
