Fiona Cassim: There's no place like home? I wouldn't know, I've never had one but that could change

There's no place like home. That's what Dorothy said in 'The Wizard of Oz'. Today, I look around at an Ireland I no longer recognise and I wonder how many people would agree with Dorothy.

This is an Ireland where families are sleeping out on the open streets; others are crowded into hotels and hostels with no cooking facilities. They are spending their weekly pittance on takeaways and sandwiches. This week, 13 families were evicted from their residences because the landlord chose to increase the rent and refused to renew the lease.

These families were in emergency housing. So it's not just the private rentals or the local authority schemes that are in danger - even people with literally nowhere else to go are being moved along, treated like a nuisance rather than part of a crisis.
