Our Defence Forces were centre stage yesterday and on a day of national celebration and they did Ireland proud.

It was also most fitting that the Defence Forces were at the core of yesterday's commemoration because of the direct historical continuity between the men and women of the Easter Rising and their only legitimate successors in our national army.

The official tittle Óglaigh na hÉireann was given to the force set up by Eoin MacNeill in 1913, "to secure and maintain the rights and liberties common to the whole people of Ireland".
