It's often just as a health crisis hits that an elderly person and their family face the dilemma of whether they should opt for a nursing home or stay in their own house.

Repeated surveys show it is the preferred wish of most older people to remain at home - but if the support is not adequate then a nursing home is the best option.

However, the difference between enjoying the comfort of one's own fireside, or going to a nursing home, can be getting a proper home-care package where carers and other health staff visit every day to help with medication, getting out of bed, cooking or physical therapy.
