Amid the latest controversies and crises that have engulfed this administration over the past fortnight, subtle changes have taken place in the Fine Gael succession stakes.

The prospect, albeit a slim one, of Health Minister Simon Harris emerging as a leadership contender has now receded. While Mr Harris cannot be faulted for the determination, hard work and compassion shown since his appointment, these qualities alone are wholly insufficient.

His claim that under-performing HSE bosses will be moved on has not stood up to scrutiny.
