Businesses that handle cash and those in isolated rural areas have most reason to be concerned at today's watershed moment in the policing of the State.

Tonight in Temple Bar in Dublin, and in other town centres where large numbers of people are intoxicated, could prove troublesome.

There would normally only be around 1,300 gardaí on duty on a Friday night - or any night, for that matter. About a third would be on station duty prepared to respond to emergency calls or provide support for another third, who should be out on patrol in cars or on foot.
