Defence Forces united on threat posed by 'lone wolves'

The increased threat of home-grown terrorist attacks is now the biggest fear confronting Ireland and other EU countries, as jihadis return from fighting in conflict zones, such as Syria and Iraq.
Threat assessments here remain low and a senior Department of Justice official told the Irish Independent there is no evidence that Ireland is being used as a transit hub by extremists.
However, government ministers and security chiefs remain concerned that this country could be used as a back door launchpad for attacks in the UK or on mainland Europe.
