Arrests and release highlight lunacy of system
In spending the briefest of spells in prison, not even making it to a cell, Independent TDs Clare Daly and Mick Wallace have enjoyed the fruits of their constitutionally enshrined right to equality before the law.
Last year, almost 9,000 committal warrants led to imprisonment for non-payment of fines, mostly relating to non-payment of court fines for road traffic offences.
Released within hours of their arrival in prison, the two TDs were treated no differently than the vast majority of fine defaulters who are arrested and brought to prison for non-payment of fines only to be instantly released through a revolving door once the relevant paperwork is filed.
