The Gold Cup winner was ridden for his father by a young man with a public schoolboy accent and the kind of lifestyle that makes Ranulph Fiennes sound a dilettante.

"Racing's a dreamer's sport," Sam Waley-Cohen had said with a smile before delivering Long Run to a win that, literally, sent rumbles through the Cotswolds.
