Jury out on move from 'Stadium'

Ken Egan

KEN EGAN was probably speaking for a sizeable section of the boxing community this week when lamenting the decision to move this year's Elite Senior Championship finals out of the National Stadium.

Finals night on the South Circular Road is one of Irish sport's grittiest and most thrillingly evocative experiences.

But if amateur boxing is, finally, broadening its horizons on the back of some remarkable achievements from the High Performance Unit, then the move to Citywest makes commercial sense.

Only time will tell if the night's distinctive personality survives this brave up-scaling.
