Egan's fame will be used by cynical vote chasers
KENNETH EGAN'S apparently imminent decision to run as a Fine Gael candidate in next May's local elections makes the stomach lurch.
Because it smacks of pretty crass opportunism by a political party all but looking to buy votes in a convenience store. Egan (above) is a gentleman who may, indeed, hold a strong interest in "young peoples' issues." But it isn't his sense of social responsibility that appeals to those chasing votes in Clondalkin, it is the shine off his Olympic medal.
And that's light entertainment, not politics.
