A dark joke, with no punchline . . . but is anyone really surprised?
AN old reporter's joke in Ireland used to say ruefully that if former US president Richard Nixon had been Irish, reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein would have gone to jail and Nixon would have been re-elected.
Things have changed thank goodness; these days nothing at all happens.
This week marks the fifth anniversary of the collapse of Anglo Irish – a date that highlights once again the State's extraordinary failure to get to the bottom of the events leading up to the single most calamitous event in the country's recent history.
