What will the Coalition miss in 2014? A chance to stop a new bubble
In January 2014 the Coalition will be 34 months old. Assuming the Government doesn't fall, it has another 26 months to go until the next general election. The new year will bring the last real opportunity for genuine reform this Government will get.
I'm going to argue the Coalition will miss this opportunity for reform, and in fact may choke on the imagined completion of the austerity programme begun in earnest by the previous government.
Let me be clear: Large-scale institutional change is the singular mandate of this Government. The Taoiseach never tires of insisting we can "never again return to the culture" that spawned the property bubble and its resultant sovereign solvency crisis.
