I won't lie, things were getting desperate in Kildare. A lot of fans in the county had given up on the team.

Having been the width of a crossbar from reaching a very winnable All-Ireland final under Kieran McGeeney in 2010, the past five years have been a slow and weirdly resigned march back to reality.

McGeeney's controversial departure cast a big shadow. The whole show lost some wattage. Legends like Dermot Earley and Johnny Doyle waved farewell. Talented younger players like Paddy Brophy headed for Australia. Inevitably big questions were hanging over Jason Ryan.
