You don't need as many degrees as Eamon O'Shea to realise it's all or nothing for Tipp this summer

Donny Mahoney

Tipperary manager Eamon O'Shea is the smartest man in the GAA. We in the media do not pay due deference to his accomplishments in academia.

He has a PhD and two masters degrees, has written or co-written 15 books and over 80 scientific papers and is at the forefront of the drive to change the way people with dementia are cared for in this country.

As an expert in the economics of aging, O'Shea must have disposed with the romanticism of blind hope - the sports fan's great crutch - a long time ago. Whether he's looking at a spreadsheet with economic data or at a hurling match, he must only see life's cold, hard facts.
