It was a perfect spring day that ended in tragedy. On Holy Thursday, last year, four-year-old Ciaran Treacy was returning with his mother and brother from a happy visit to his grandparents in Co Laois when a drunk driver collided with their car, killing him and destroying his family's life forever.

The drunk driver, Finbarr O'Rourke, walked away from the scene.

Ciaran lost his life and his shattered mother, Gillian, was severely injured. She has undergone 10 operations and may yet lose the lower part of one of her legs.
