WHEN South Korea hit the skids more than a decade ago, its citizens queued to hand over cherished items of gold jewellery -- from wedding bands to their children's culturally important first birthday rings.
Within several months, 3.5 million people donated 270 tonnes of gold for melting down to repair the national finances.
Sacrifice became a badge of honour, with austerity measures gladly embraced.
