Martina Devlin: OMG, Jedward win would take our minds off bailout
I've considered this carefully, and I've decided Jedward are probably going to win the Eurovision Song Contest. And whatever people think about the Quiff Twins -- though their energy and spirit works for me -- we should celebrate. High time we focused on something positive.
We could be fretting about the pension levy. Or about the lack of progress on the Anglo Irish Bank investigation. Or about the example set by the Japanese premier, who handed back the prime ministerial portion of his salary until the crisis is resolved -- a lead which senior politicians here won't rush to follow. Some of us, perhaps fewer in number, could even be brooding about Arnold Schwarzenegger's marriage break-up.
So many reasons to mope, so few hours in the day. But on Tuesday night I shook off Churchill's black dog of depression and cracked open a Magnum -- ice-cream, not bubbly, there's a recession on -- and watched Eurovision 2011's first qualifying heat.
