Observe the sons and daughters of Ireland marching towards another Somme. Towards carnage on an epic scale, just as during that protracted World War One conflict 95 years ago.
Courage and patriotism are motifs in Frank McGuinness's play -- keynotes dusted down again today to brace us for austerity. But another theme unites play and present: a sense of waste.
Economic war is being waged here and, in common with traditional warfare, a bloodbath is inevitable. But pain will not be all-inclusive. Already we can see battle positions taken up; generals positioned well back from the frontline and foot soldiers readied as cannon fodder.
