Martina Devlin: €460m casino capers show we have learned nothing

HAS businessman Richard Quirke watched 'Field of Dreams' with its persuasive refrain of "if you build it, he will come" once too often?
It's pie in the sky to suggest the air will be thick with private jets and helicopters around Two-Mile Borris if a casino complex pops up there. Those Tipperary fields can never be turned into the Elysian Fields, no matter how high he builds his stately pleasure-dome.
Quirke's proposal to give Las Vegas a run for its money overcame the planning permission hurdle this week. But it remains a delusion. One that raises hopes -- unrealistically, in view of the gaping hole at the scheme's centre -- of job creation.
