Francois Hollande promised France would be a boring country under his presidency. It's a pledge he has proved unable to keep – and not only because of that combustible relationship between his current lady and a former partner.

Another ex has set off fireworks on the French political scene. The latest rocket involves Mr Hollande's ousted predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, not yet ready to embrace retirement despite Carla Bruni keeping the home fires burning.

Mr Sarkozy, who was Monsieur Bling-Bling to Mr Hollande's Monsieur Normal, has been placed under investigation for alleged wrongdoing in relation to campaign finances. And because it is France, it seems appropriate – or at least not surprising – to find a woman implicated. Although in this case, she's 90. We're not dealing with just any 90-year-old, though, but France's richest woman: L'Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, a generous political donor.
