Parents left unsupported and unsure during pre-school years
THIS week in my neighbourhood, I came upon an election-style poster of my local Fine Gael TD. The smiling image familiar from the last general election campaign was in sharp contrast to the poster's essential message: "Don't let Fine Gael legalise abortion."
It is a fundamentally dishonest piece of propaganda, aimed at misleading the public and intimidating the TD by linking her with abortion. This no doubt is being replicated in every constituency to pile the pressure on deputies as the bill continues its passage. The question is, what action should the targeted TD take?
If it was me, I would challenge the essential lie in the poster campaign. But many TDs seem wary of engaging in the fray, choosing instead to take down the posters and limit the damage. Who can blame them? It is ultimately a dialogue of the deaf with people in fixed positions unwilling to budge.
