The generalissmo of Westport, Michael Ring, made an incursion into the nearby town of Ballina last night, at the head of his own army.
The junior sports and tourism minister was overseeing a military re-enactment as part of the 'In Humbert's Footsteps Festival', honouring French General Jean Joseph Amable Humbert's military campaign in Mayo in August 1798 – a date since known as The Year of the French.
And rumour has it that Mayo's finest was practising taking military salutes and parades, in case he gets the nod for the vacant post of Minister for Defence in the upcoming reshuffle.
But the burning question was – did Ballina TD Michelle Mulherin know in advance of the invasion of her colleague into her closely-guarded turf?
"A messenger was dispatched to let her know he was on the march," helpfully explained one of Ring's cohort.
