Politics really is such a competitive sport.

Independent TD Finian McGrath was hobbling about Leinster House last week after an operation on his knee, when Fianna Fail's Billy Kelleher spotted him showing off his war wound to a colleague. Being, a) a politician, and b) a Corkonian, Billy immediately wanted to go one better. "That's nothing," he was overheard declaring, as he pulled up his trouser leg to reveal a bigger scar than Finian's.

However, both have been outdone by Fine Gael's Peter Fitzpatrick who finds himself on crutches after falling off his bicycle and breaking his hip. "It's painful, but it could be worse," said a cheerful Peter, sporting an admirable glass half-full attitude.
