Tesco should have its own system for dealing with shoplifters, declared a District Court judge this week. It should not expect the Irish taxpayer to foot the bill for the huge cost in bringing the people before the courts.
The judge made these remarks while dealing with a Lithuanian, who pleaded guilty to stealing a €6.99 bottle of wine from a Tesco super- market in Galway, and who had already been jailed for a similar offence.
But in another court, a judge agreed that the Government should be alerted to the fact that prisoners were not serving their full term of sentences imposed upon them, after a Lithuanian pleaded guilty to stealing alcohol from another Galway supermarket.
