Kevin Myers: If the primary goal of a society is the eradication of poverty, then you will get only more poverty
Big times, large questions: are we capable of harnessing the two? Or are we to be stuck in the endless mind-numbing bickering of righteousness and special-pleading that precedes and follows every Budget?
This is based on a caricature society beloved of CORI, the Council of Religious of Ireland, which has now metamorphosed into the slightly less dog-collared Social Justice Ireland.
In this caricature, there is a caste of villainous bankers and fat cats on the one hand, and on the other, the huddled masses of the poor, the homeless, the hungry. This is a morally very assuring scenario to inhabit -- for who can take the side of the rich against the poor?
