The Labour Party's king in waiting is ready for war

Alan Kelly is a man who does not take political, media or Labour fools lightly

It is perhaps not surprising that Alan Kelly is 'in the news' so often. The number of Irish politicians worth talking about is slight enough. For Fine Gael there is Leo and... we'll get back to you. In the case of Fianna Fail... well, we'll try to get back to you. Kelly, though, is one of the few politicians whose departing back attracts intrigued whispers.

In a political environment where testosterone is almost an illegal substance, the barrel-chested strut, the desire and the ambition inspire contrasting views.

Both friend and foe agree, though, that Labour's new Environment Minister is, they say, the man who would be king... sooner rather than later.
